"Me neither, Tavbro," Gamzee grinned, enjoying the feeling of sand between his toes and the water lapping around his calves. He looked around at the area to confirm Tavros's statement. "They motherfuckin do, Tavbro. Wonder why nobody comes out here to relax. Pretty nice place to chill." Certainly not a place to live, not above the water, he thought. Too barren and open.
Beneath the waves, Eridan was enjoying himself immensely, getting a good swim in while he could. Who knew the next time he would be able to swim in the ocean on their journey? He had to get all he could out of this short stint in the waves. He dove deeply, taking in the corals and fish, chowing down on a couple things while he was down there. Tea and macaroons were nice, but a fresh fish or crab was even better.
"Tavbro! Look at this thing," Gamzee was bending over a colorful sea star he had found among the rocks. "Bitchtits motherfucker right here, all colorful and shit," he let out some excessive swears as compliments to the little creature in his excitement. This ocean thing was pretty cool. He hoped they could come back later when there weren't such pressing matters on hand to worry about so they could relax and maybe even go for a swim if it was warmer out.

It was fucking /freezing!/ She couldn't understand how everyone was so content, especially the copper - he was warmblooded, after all. He should have been worse off than she was, considering the fact that she shouldn't have been bothered by the cold at all. Her body was supposed to get accustomed to the weather, as she was closer in relation to seadwellers and she ought to have been fine with whatever the temperature outside was. However, Vriska hated the cold weather - she preferred warmth and the sun over any drop in temperature. In her pack, she had included several sweaters, and she immediately pulled one out and over her head for some much needed warmth.
Looking up from his own mild exploring of the ocean, Tavros's eyes lit up in excitement. "What is that?" He questioned, looking over the starfish in complete astonishment. Much of what he saw today he had never experienced before and, honestly, it was thrilling. Holding out his palms, he silently asked for a turn with the animal, wondering if he could commune with it. He wasn't sure if this creature had a brain, as he could only commune with beings that held a real consciousness and could think.

Gamzee hadn't picked the star fish up, in case it didn't like being above the water, so he moved over so Tavros could get to the creature easier. He watched with excitement as his friend picked the cool little critter up. "No idea, never seen one before," he answered. "Maybe the Hare knows; we could ask him when he comes back up."
Eridan was darting about under the waves, filling up on his favorites. He thought he might actually do some hunting for the others as well, seeing as it was getting dark and maybe he could earn a bit of their favor with something nice to eat. He must have been in a superb mood to do something so nice. Before he could start gathering random creatures, though, something sparkled and caught his eye. It ended up being a pearl-bearing oyster. Glancing back at the shore, it didn't look like his kismesis was having any fun of her own. ...it wasn't as if he wasn't allowed to do nice things for her every so often, was it? Especially not if he made an overture of being rude while doing so. He took the pearled oyster, closing it tightly and using some strong sea grass to tie it shut firmly, making it look like a bow on a present. He then charged at the air, swimming quickly, and used the momentum to jump out of the water so he could hurl the little package straight at the Hatter. "HEY YOU, YOU PIRATE WENCH! AFRAID OF GETTING WET?!" he called in a taunt to get her attention before diving back into the depths to go gather some crabs. He smiled to himself and watched her from below to see how his gift was received.

Vriska, now, had pulled her knees up to her chest and was trying to retain as much heat as possible, but that was next to improbably when it came to her coldblooded nature. She shivered and rubbed her palms over her arms, fully invested in keeping warm when she heard the familiar gabbing of her kismesis. Lifting her head with annoyance clear on her face, she prepared an angry rebuke, "Fuck off, you seadwelling trash!" Her eyes followed whatever he threw at her, but she was much too irritated to go out and look at whatever it was. It was probably dressed up so nicely to assuage her suspicions - that being that the present was actually a prank of some sort. Nice try, Marchie, she thought. But there was no way she was going to fall for it.
Tavros crouched down somewhat in the water, just enough that he could see better but his dress wouldn't get wet, and plucked the sea star as gently as he could, "Wow...how bizarre," He murmured, "It feels so weird!"

Eridan was vexed she didn't even look at the nice thing he'd found her. He'd have to goad her into it somehow. It didn't take him long to gather up a filling number of crustaceans, and he swam back as the sun was setting quickly.
"Oh oh, what's it like, Tavbro?" Gamzee was quite excited by the creature, and how apparently it was okay about being held, though he suspected that Tavros might have been influencing it, so it might not have worked for anyone else. He crouched too, and gingerly reached into the water with one hand to gently pet one of its arms, grinning at the strange texture. "So fuckin weird! Miraculous, this little motherfucker." He bent a little too close, ending up accidentally nudging foreheads with Tavros. He backed up a little, giggling, "Sorry, Tavbro."
Eridan emerged a little later, staying under the water as long as possible with his catch dragging behind him. He stood elegantly, water cascading off of him as he walked onto the shore towards Vriska. He kicked the little parcel at her so it bumped her firmly, "What, not going to open this? Not /afraid/ are you?" he scoffed, walking past her in a self-important huff and dropping his burden a little ways from her and stopping to watch the other two.

He continued petting and poking at the starfish, though was as tender in all his touches as he would be with any other animal, then snorted in laughter as their foreheads bumped. "Heheh, it's okay. Though," He looked up at the sky, and how the stars were beginning to peek from behind a strange mixture of inky blackness and a royal blue, "Perhaps we ought to get out the water, now. Set up camp." He stood and stepped out the water, his feet immediately getting coated in sand as the grains stuck to his wet toes and soles.
Vriska glared at him as he walked past, her hands coming up to readjust her hat as she paid no mind to the gift. Instead, she gave him a taste of his own medicine and promptly ignored him, standing up as Tavros approached them and instructed that they find someplace safe to set up camp.

...Damn, well, he'd just keep it for later, he guessed. Surreptitiously he picked up the little package, sticking it in his bag for later. He'd get dressed after they set up camp, so picked up all his things and the small feast he'd gathered and approached the others easily. "What did you two find over there?" he cooed at Tavros as he followed along, looking for a good camping spot.
Gamzee followed Tavros out of the water, not bothering with footwear until he was dry and wouldn't get sand everywhere. He did pick up everything of his and Tavros's though, deciding to take a stint as pack mule while scoping out a good spot. There really wasn't much in the way of shelter, it was much too flat for Gamzee's comfort. He decided to let the other's intuition tell them where to set up for the night. He hadn't been wrong yet so why not stick with a good thing?

"It was a star!" He gleefully began, projecting a bright smile up at Eridan; he couldn't see why the Mad Hatter was always so rude and mean to him. When the seadweller was in a good mood, he was rather sweet and easy to get along with. "Well, I am thinking that it had to have been some kind of fish, or something? Um," Tavros tapped at his chin with his index finger, offhandedly thanking Gamzee for taking his things while his mind was on it for a moment, "I have never been in the ocean before, and I do not know much about it, uh, in general, so I am not certain as to what Gamzee and I saw. But it looked like a star and was a little rough to the touch. It was in the sand."
Vriska pulled her things onto her back and followed Tavros as he walked around a bit blindly, bare feet tracking sand everywhere as he finally spotted a few trees off towards his left. There were six of them, all situated in a semi-circle with almost blindingly white trunks and black foliage. Tavros, hardly concerned with the landscape, instantly scampered over, excited that there was someplace in the flat land that was somewhat suitable for camp. "Let's get a nice fire started," He began, offering a teasing grin to Vriska who huffed and huddled her crossed arms closer to herself, "And eat something, too. We've spent a long time traveling, and we deserve the rest."

"Oh," Eridan began, oozing pleasantness and slightly bubbly; the ocean had really perked him up. "Probably a sea star, or star fish they're also called. Not really a fish. Not very appetizing either. They're pretty cool though," he mused on the subject. When Tavros mentioned eating, he held up his catch. "I got dinner covered; thought you all might like a taste of the sea. We sea dwellers get the best food, obviously," he puffed up his chests a bit and flipped his hair, showing off some for his two new acquaintances. He dropped them to pick up some firewood helpfully.
Gamzee was fascinated by the weird looking trees, and touched a trunk gently, looking up at their dark leaves. He set the packs down, taking the tents they had and preparing to set them up. "Did you guys bring tents or any fuckin thing to camp under?" he asked the other two. Eridan shook his head, he had no need for a tent when he could just sleep in some shelter under the waves whenever he traveled. He marveled when the crab was revealed. "I've never had those things, see them in the market sometimes. Expensive as hell in the city," he commented, setting up the first tent while the others worked on getting a fire started.

He glanced at the catch before thanking Eridan gratefully, glad to see that there was someone pretty helpful on their team of sorts. He watched as he began the search for firewood, and Vriska set to work on setting up her own tent as she answered Gamzee's question with great pride. She was used to fending for herself and going off on little journeys within the Screechlands for buried treasure - it was all part of her pirate ploys, after all.
" 'A course I did! A good captain is always prepared," Vriska, with the ease of much practice, set up her black tent and rolled blankets and the like inside as Tavros constructed a fire with nearby pieces of wood. The fire crackled on the dry wood, hissing and beginning to lap up the fuel eagerly. Vriska, no matter how excited she was for some warmth, did her part and snatched up sticks and twigs.
Tavros's eyes focused on the crab, and he yelped in surprise, his brown eyes widening as he covered his mouth in shock. He loved all animals, that much was true, but this /thing/ was absolutely terrifying. "Wh-What is that?" He questioned breathlessly, inching back some as he shakily busied himself with setting up his own tent, "It's horrifying!" Its legs writhed and wriggled, he squeaked in fright, covering his eyes as he dropped his work for the time being, "We are s-supposed to /eat/ that?"
The Mad Hatter snickered, her blue lips spreading into a grin, "My, my, Alice. Ye never cease to amaze me with your qualities, truly." The words were a tad more condescending than she may have intended, but it was too late to take it back now, "Have ye never seen a crab before? Not at the market, not in highblood ads? They really are harmless, besides a pinch or two."

Finishing setting up one side of their tent quickly, Gamzee went to Tavros's side as he started freaking out a bit at the crabs. He took up what Tavros had been doing, setting a comforting hand on his friend's shoulder. He stayed silent in his comfort as Vriska talked down to Tavros. "Crabs are a little freaky lookin', sick nasty claws and spikes and all that," he said quietly after she was done commenting in her way. He would have suggested Tavros try communing with them, but thought it might be hard for him since they were planning on eating them. He looked at Eridan and indicated the wiggling crustaceans with a small jerk of his head, hoping he'd get the message.
Eridan, picking up on Gamzee's signalling and Tavros's fright, quickly dispatched the beasts in question, then propped them next to the fire, not sure of how to cook them, as he never ate them that way.
Gamzee took the blankets and sleeping bag off their packs and handed them to Tavros with a small smile. He could set up the tent the rest of the way as he worked on cooking. Approaching the fire with a few things from his bag, he set up a metal rack he'd gotten a long time ago above the fire. From his book he'd read that crabs were typically boiled, so he took the cooking pot he'd brought along and got some salt water from the ocean. Sure, people weren't to /drink/ salt water, but why not cook with it? It was pre-seasoned! He returned and set it on the grate, waiting for the water to boil before plopping in the crabs. Gamzee looked over at Tavros to make sure he was alright while he watched the crabs cooking.

Tavros made a point not to look at the crabs; he couldn't imagine that something like that was actually a real, honest to goodness animal! It was spiky and threatening and all around frightening, like a hardened over spider. He shivered and kept setting up the tent, pillows and blankets and the like included. He seemed to be alright so long as he was not witnessing the crabs in any way, though he was not sure how he was supposed to go about eating them - he had never eaten seafood before, and while he didn't have a problem eating animals he hadn't communed with, it would be a different hurdle to get over when it came to consuming something he was afraid of.
Vriska fished around in her coat pocket and handed over the various papers and coins to Tavros, but she lingered her sight on the money. "How did you get yer hand on coins so ancient? They look to be like treasure more than currency."
"I have no idea how I got these," He said sheepishly, turning the coins over in his hands. "When I fell down, into Wonderland, I received those along with the map."
"Fascinating," And here, she seemed less like her rude self and more like someone that was truly intrigued in the other person speaking, "Even the clothes?"
Tavros nodded, a bit sheepish that he hadn't any better answers, "Even the clothes," He confirmed.
"I'll be damned," The Mad Hatter shook her head in disbelief, taking off her hat and slipping it into her tent, "Next you'll be showing all kinds of powers, won't ya, Alice?"
The brownblood laughed, turning his attention to the trees as he nodded, his fingertips scaling the trunk as he looked over at her, "Heheh, I guess so, but I do not- Um." He stopped abruptly, confusedly observing Vriska's slack jaw and widened eyes as she gasped, "I spoke too soon."
Tavros turned his head to look at the tree and, much to his surprise, it had begun to take color. The spot that he was touching was slowly bleeding color into the rest of the bare white trunk, the rich chestnut shade gradually inkling into the canvas of wood. Shocked, he snatched back his hand, and the coloring stopped, an oval shape of brown plastered onto the tree.

The crabs were coming along nicely when the two purple bloods heard sounds of surprise from the other two. They both glanced up to see what the matter was. Eridan was baffled, and wandered over almost immediately. Gamzee, though, moved the pot off the heat to prevent over-cooking before heading over.
"How did you do that?" Eridan questioned, squinting at the bark with mistrust. What were these strange trees? Was it only Alice that could, perhaps, restore? their color? Or were they some sort of strange magic plant, and would there be repercussions?
"Pretty wicked, Tavbro. Maybe it's one of your Alice things. Did it feel weird?" he asked, a relaxed smile on his face. He felt better now they were at camp and he could actually make himself appear as more useful.
While he was by their bags, he dug out the book to check what it had to say about crabs, and if there was anything specific to eat them with. He remembered they had to crack the shells to get at the meat, and there were special ways to get the meat out of the joints that the book talked about, which he figured would also be useful when the time came.
After that, he observed the bark closely again, wondering if the texture had changed as it became colored. He touched the spot with one finger, touching the white on the other side and running his fingers along the bark to see. Why did it change, how, would it be permanent or temporary? he wondered curiously.

"No, not at all!" In fact, had Vriska not said anything, Tavros never would have known that he was changing the tree like this. All the trees in the relatively barren landscape were completely smooth to the touch, but the restoration of color meant the restoration of texture, and the bumps and ridges of the bark shone to life. "I do not know how I did it. I guess it is an Alice perk?" Hesitantly, he pressed his fingers to the tree again, and the color began once more, but Vriska was quick to stop him.
"These trees may not be dangerous, but it could be to your health," She gave up on the pirate accent - she hadn't anyone to impress, after all. And the accent was really only to cement her character in her rivalry with Eridan. "Who knows what it's doing to you."
Tavros dropped his hand, peering at his palm and fingers but found no real issues. Perhaps that was part of his reason to be there, perhaps the Screechlands were not as desolate and dire as they appeared. Underneath each coating of sadness and desperation was something lively and gorgeous. "I suppose so. But I have reason to suspect otherwise."

Gamzee trusted Tavros's intutition, so if his friend said it didn't bother him he trusted that. He grinned at him and at the cool discovery, then moved back to the fire to continue cooking. Sitting with the book, he looked through it. There wasn't really anything recommended to have with crab, except for butter, which he didn't have because it wouldn't stay fresh on a journey. So he flipped through to the instructions for eating the beasts, setting it back away from the fire behind him as he continued, stirring them around some with a wooden spoon he'd brought.
After studying the tree, Eridan shrugged it off and went to put on his clothes. He slipped into his pants and shirt again, slipping on his jacket against the cold air, so much less friendly than cold water in his mind. He stuck by Vriska and Tavros, not interested in the cooking, really. He contemplated how he was going to get Vriska to open that pearl, but was having a hard time coming up with anything that would work.
A short time later Gamzee determined that the crabs were well and truly cooked, as they had turned a vibrant red and white from their greyish blue before. "Foods done," he called. "Tavbro, there should be some plates in my bag, I think." He moved the pot off the hottest part and started fishing around with the spoon to lift the cooked creatures out so they could cool some before being handled.

Tavros spent more time that was probably necessary playing with the tree. He touched the trunk a couple times, then the leaves on low-hanging branches before crouching down and placing his palm against the sand. The sand didn't change color, which gave him reason to believe that only things meant to be a different color would change. How intriguing! He wondered if he had the ability to take away color, as well, but he wasn't sure how to bring that about.
Vriska spent most of the time scribbling away in her journal. She took many things away from her ancestor, and writing down in a diary was one of them. Her life was not nearly as exciting, but it was fun to look at past memories and events and eagerly store up the new ones. Besides, her perspectives and renditions of life were always the most fun. Once the food was finished, she set down her quill, ink well, and journal in her tent, then sat at the fire with an anticipating grin, "Wonderful. I can't remember the last time I had cooked crab."
The Alice dug around for plates, finding four as he happily handed them out to everyone whilst avoiding looking at the despicable creatures intended for consuming. He swallowed thickly, "How are we supposed to eat....uh. Them?"

"Here, my book has instructions, if you wanna read them," Gamzee said kindly, indicating his book behind him as he dished out a crab to both Vriska and Eridan, the latter of whom declined having already eaten, then dishing up one for Tavros, saving himself for last.
"From what it says there's a lot of cracking and joint shit to do. If it's too grody I can help," Gamzee offered the last bit quietly, sitting close to the petite copperblood in front of the fire. He took one of the legs off, first, and was surprised at how easy it was. He pulled it out gently, getting a good bite for his effort. It was somewhat salty from the briny cooking bath it had been in, and he could tell why butter would be recomended, as it was already slightly buttery; so, pretty good for not being spiced with anything else. It was such a different texture than the fish Gamzee had had in the past. He spent a little while marveling the new food. "It's really good, Tav, you have to try it." Removing the largest part of the crab's leg from the joint, he cracked it in half to get the meat out, eating delicately, and waiting for Tavros. He wondered if he was going to be okay. These crabs looked to really be bothering him.

●
The crabs were /disgusting./ He had no doubts that the meat inside was delicious, but the process was just as sickening as the creature itself. He suddenly did not feel as hungry as before, but Tavros knew that he ought to eat anyway - balanced meals would keep him healthy, after all.
Embarrassed that his fear of the animal was getting in the way of the meal, Tavros scooted close to Gamzee and murmured, "Um. Can you do it for me? I do not think that I can stomach it."
Vriska commented that Tavros was just being wriggler, then noisily popped a joint that Tavros visibly jumped at. "Alice, they could hardly hurt you when they were alive, what makes you think they can hurt you when they're dead?"
"They are gross," He retorted, huffing quietly as he curled up towards Gamzee, "I can hardly stand looking at them."

🌀
Gamzee grinned happily, opening his side up to him so he could be as close as he wanted. "'Course, Tavbro." He quickly took some of the meat out of another part. "Here," he said, gesturing to hand it to Tavros, then pausing, having an idea. "If they're too gross to look at, you can close your eyes if you want." He waited to see what his friend preferred, totally fine with feeding Tavros; it nothing more than a friendly gesture in reaction to Tavros's disgust at the gnarly looking creatures he told himself.
Eridan watched with interest at how the crustaceans were eaten by the land dwellers. It wasn't so different than how a sea dweller did, a little less teeth work and wriggling to deal with, but essentially the same. Personally he thought Gamzee's gesture was sweet, but he liked to think he was a romantic. He figured Vriska was going to make some sort of retort against it; she liked to think she was above such things as a coldhearted coldblood, so he shot her a look, trying to keep her from potentially ruining something.

●
Rather than direct her annoyances towards the lovey-dovey couple that were too shy to just admit they liked each other, Vriska pointed her irritation to Eridan, "/What?/" She wasn't so horrible as to ruin every single moment Tavros and Gamzee shared!
Thankful that such an option was given to him, Tavros nodded and shot his hands up to cover his eyes, his mouth opening as a cinnamon-colored tongue slightly poked out. He could smell the saltiness of the crab, of the sea water and the succulent meat. Tavros, really, was almost desperately hungry, and the growling of his stomach clearly depicted that. So long as he didn't look at the crabs, he wouldn't feel so nauseous.
She was a little insulted that her kismesis was so quick to take their side. Vriska remembered a time when she could crack jokes about relationships and Eridan would, occasionally, join her in their mildly bitter spite. But now, it appeared that he was attempting to gather good favor with Alice, who she felt would like them all regardless of their actions or transgressions.

The whole ordeal was more taxing for the sea dweller as he felt hopeless about the prospects they had. He did feel he was warming up to this charming twosome maybe a little quickly, but he was willing to chalk that down to thinking that at least he and Gamzee might not survive this venture. Both of their kind had been killed in the past for no other reason than they were a shade of purple, so something in him wanted the other to have as much goodness as he could in the short time they might be together, assuming the worst would happen when they got to the reds. Eridan had also tried to do something nice for Vriska, and she had just ignored it. Which brought him back to the shell. He got it out again and threw it by her leg as a retort. "That's what," he said, "Just open the damn thing." He laid down next to the fire, head kind of nearer her than anything else, and watched her to make sure she did open it this time.
Gamzee ignored them, favoring the sight of his adorable companion. He put the bite of crab on Tavros's tongue, and as soon as he had it quickly cracked open some more to feed him. He took bites between when Tavros was still chewing on one.

Nibbling on a mouthful of crab, she stared at the shell with furrowed brows. "It's probably just something to scare me," Vriska grumbled, deciding she would finish up the last bit of her crab, then open the present. Her clawed fingers plucked up the gift, then she peeled away the sea grass and looked even more confused at what lay beneath it. "...An oyster. I knew this was a prank," Her eyes, blue and unbalanced with her one unique pupil, glared over at Eridan with vengeance planned in her gaze, "You made it all cute with the seagrass bow and wrappings, just so I could feel disappointed when I saw that it was nothing but a useless oyster. Congratulations, you have officially become the worst troll on the face of the planet."
Tavros brightened at the taste, though he didn't remove his hands. Instead, he chewed and swallowed, then began rambling about how wonderful crab tasted. It was no wonder that only highbloods dined on crab - it was absolutely delicious, even if they lacked all the proper condiments and seasonings. "For something so scary, it tastes heavenly!"

"For AHAB'S sake, just OPEN it," he groaned at her. "Jegus, try to do something nice ONE TIME and it turns out as this whole debacle," he muttered under his breath. Though, as the seagrass holding the oyster shut was now removed, the oyster opened on it's own in Vriska's hands without her having to bother. The little bivalve had been working long and hard, apparently, as it was quite the fine thing, with opal hints where it caught the fire's light. It was also decently large for a pearl, close the diameter of a silver piece. Eridan watched her face subtly, trying to appear as if he wasn't watching so he could watch her true reaction to it, not the hidden one he thought she would give if she felt she was being observed.
"I like it too, it's so much different than fish is," Gamzee said, in between bites. "Here, some more," Gamzee put another bite in front of Tavros.

The Mad Hatter looked down when she noticed the oyster opening, and while she had been expecting emptiness and furthered irritation towards Eridan, instead, she was greeted with a large pearl. Her eyes widened a bit, and she set the oyster to the side as she plucked the pearl up and held it up some to her gaze, looking over it with a keen eye. She had seen her fair share of pearls, -most of them stolen from highbloods, as she was too blue for it to matter to them very much- and Vriska could tell that this pearl was way better than any she had encountered in the past. "Whoa, shit, Marchie." She breathed, "You got this for me?" Now things weren't making much sense. She was his kismesis. He was supposed to be relatively mean to her, then let her one up him, and it would continue like that until it dissolved into sloppy kisses on the beach. That's the way it had always been, after all. "...What are you implying here, huh?"
Lowering his hands some, he smiled over at Gamzee, eagerly opening his mouth for another bite. They continued on like this, the tip of Tavros's tongue instinctively flicking at the end and, sometimes, swiping at the tips of Gamzee's fingers. He claimed that it was an accident, but sometimes it was on purpose. "You are awfully good at cooking," He praised, "I could eat your cooking, all day."

"What?! I have to be implying something whenever I decide maybe I'll be nice for once? I'm not always an angler fish, you know. I thought you'd like it!" he was making a show of being pissy, secretly pleased that she seemed to like it quite a bit. He had known it was pretty good, but from the way she reacted it was better than what he had thought. Really he had just picked it up because he knew she'd like it, she had looked miserable, and it could be one of her pirate treasures.
Some of the licks to his fingertips didn't affect him at all, feeling exactly like an accident would. However, a few of them sent slight sparks, and made Gamzee wonder if they were intentional. He was starting to get inklings of Tavros's flirtings with the increased exposure to his efforts. That last comment he figured was definitely a little more than friendly sounding. "I think you'd get full at some point, Tavbro," he chuckled. "I like cooking. It's pretty fun. Lots of different fuckin things to be made, different tastes and textures and shit. ...I've never tried baking, though. Always wanted to," he mused, continuing feeding the both of them. "Maybe I'll have to save up for some things so I can try it. You want to be the first to taste what I bake? Once I've gotten it perfect, of course," he asked.
